Class Synopsis: This course provides an overview of the 2019 California Electrical Code (CEC). Course attendees will learn about the important code changes in the 2019 CEC that include requirements for Direct-Current Systems, Energy Management Systems, grounding and bonding, arc-fault circuit interrupters, and definitions. As technology advances, so do the safety concerns and requirements of electrical design and construction compliance.  This course provides insight regarding the latest code requirements and the move toward “off-grid” technology.  Also learn about the significant new energy efficiency requirements related to electrical installations.

Please bring your 2017 NEC or 2019 CEC

Instructors

Marvin Millet is the retired Chief Electrical Inspector for the City of Oakland, where he worked for 25 years.  He was also an Electrical Plans Examiner and is a Journeyman Electrician.  He held the positions of IAEI Northern California Chapter President, IAEI Southwestern Section President, and is currently the IAEI Northern California Chapter Representative to the Southwestern Section.  

Mike Stone is the NEMA West Coast Field Representative. He is the alternate member representing NEMA on Code Making Panel 1 for the 2017 National Electrical Code. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical and Energy Code Advisory Committee for the CA Building Standards Commission. Prior to his tenure with NEMA, he worked for over 25 years in California building departments at the County of Monterey and the Cities of Monterey, Salinas and as Building Official for the City of Watsonville. He holds seven ICC Certifications and is a Certified Access Specialist (CASp). He has taught code classes at several CA Community Colleges and has been an IBEW electrical apprenticeship instructor. Mike is a member of ICC, IAEI, IBEW and NFPA, and is a Certified General Electrician in the State of California.

Class Synopsis: This is a 3 ½ hour class describing the most significant changes in the 2019 California Plumbing and Mechanical Codes. The class will cover important changes in the mechanical code, such as the listed, labelled, marking changes, the latest requirements for ducts, fabric and phenolic ducts, clothes dryer exhaust duct transitions and power ventilators, refrigerants and machinery room requirements, some reminders, and many other changes.

 

The plumbing code portion will cover siphonic roof drainage systems, cathodic protection for underground steel piping, the changing world of toilet facilities and minimum fixtures, allowance for testing some plastic piping with air, the new peak water demand calculator, the never-ending discussion on ABS/PVC, CPVC, PEX, and PEX-AL-PEX, the new format in the code for standards and other changes.

Instructors

John LaTorra is currently a Regional Manager for CSG Consultants. He recently retired from the City of Redwood City where he was the Building and Inspection Manager. John chaired the Drafting, Public Hearing and Code Development Committees for the first international code, the International Plumbing Code. John has over 45 years of experience with municipal inspections and building codes and has been an instructor with a community college, state university and chapters for more than 41 years on building, energy, solar, mechanical and plumbing subjects. Mr. LaTorra is a former board member with ICC, ICBO and IAPMO and is able to instruct on a wide range of subjects related to the IBC, IRC, UPC, UMC, IMC and IPC.

John Taecker, P.E. has worked for Underwriters Laboratories for over 34 years. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is a California Registered Professional Engineer in Safety Engineering. He is a nationally recognized speaker on building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing products and installations. John has served on the UMC and UPC Technical Committees and the International Mechanical Code Development Committee.

Class Synopsis:  This course examines the changes to the latest California Residential Code (CRC). The course highlights those areas that have been revised from the 2016 CRC with other code topics always welcomed. Building officials, architects, designers, engineers, plans examiners, field inspectors, and counter technicians are encouraged to attend.
0.6 CEU’s from an ICC Preferred Provider and 6 HSW/LU will be offered.

Instructor:
Paul Armstrong, P.E.: Mr. Paul Armstrong, P.E., Director of Code Compliance Services, TRB & Associates, Inc. is responsible for the development of the Building Safety Service line in Southern California. Most of his career has been in the model code organizations in the development of codes and other technical services. His tasks have included secretariat to many of the previous ICBO code development committees and was secretariat of the ICC Residential Code drafting committee and the ICC International Zoning Code drafting committee. He participates on many national and local committees and assists in state and local code adoption issues. He supervised the plan review services and Code Development staff at ICBO and was responsible for providing technical assistance to ICC membership; providing quick and accurate technical information through various media and upgrading the image of code enforcement officials, the construction industry and ICC staff. He has a strong background in many of the major building codes with at least 14 years’ experience in the building codes and standards industry, strong knowledge in the ANSI A117.1, FHAct, ADA, CA Title 24 accessibility regulations and related laws and ordinances.
